Friend refuses to turn on the truck’s AC during a 2-hour road trip in 90 degree heat, passengers jump out and call a Lyft: 'My truck, my rules'

A two-hour drive in summer heat is enough to make anyone question their plans. The traffic starts and stops, and the driver refuses to turn on the air conditioning… Honestly, the situation couldn't be worse. 

In today's story, a group of friends was supposed to drive together to an event about two hours away. It was probably the hottest summer day ever, and the designated driver arrived with the truck windows rolled down. 

We all know a car can feel like an oven after sitting in the sun for too long, so maybe he was just letting the hot air out before turning on the AC. But time passed, the windows stayed down, and everyone in the truck was already sweating. So asking the driver to turn the AC on sounds pretty reasonable, don't you think? Anyone would have done the same thing. But when his friend finally asked if he was going to turn it on, the driver refused and gave an explanation that only seemed to make sense to him. Maybe he wanted to save money, or maybe he just wanted to prove a point, but either way, he could have communicated that like an adult. If money was the issue, he could have said so, and everyone could have contributed a little extra; he could have turned on the AC, and that could have been the end of the story. But no. The situation escalated so much that the passengers reached their limit and literally got out of the car in the middle of the traffic and called a Lyft home. 

What makes you think you can force people to stay in your car in 90-degree heat with the AC turned off? Is that some weird friendship test or a form of torture? Do you even like your friends? Because that's not reasonable at all. And the worst part is that the driver still dared to tell them that they had ruined his day and the event they were supposed to attend together. But he ruined the day himself when he decided his passengers' basic comfort didn't matter.

    So here's what happened. Me and three of my friends were supposed to be going to an event today, The event is about a 2-hour drive from where we all live so one of my friends was going to drive and we were all going to ride together.

  • I tell him that I am not sitting in an un air conditioned vehicle and stop and start traffic for 2 hours and that he needs to turn on the AC, the other two people in the vehicle obviously agree with me as we're all sweating through our clothes already.

  • He won't pull over but about 5 minutes later we are at a de d stop at a traffic light and we're right next to the edge of the road, I tossed my seat belt off and jump out of the truck and start heading back towards the last gas station that we passed.

  • About 10 seconds later I hear my two friends in the backseat jump out and start catching up with me, apparently they were already on the fence about the event for the same reasons that I was and this was the last straw for both of them as well.

  • We get back to the gas station that we just passed and call a Lyft to come get us and take us home, he manages to make a u-turn and get to the gas station before the lift can pick us up

  • and is trying to get us to get back in the truck saying that he'll run the AC and that we can still go but at this point we were all ped off hot and felt nasty so we just end up getting in the Lyft and leaving.
